SILENT AND SOUND – A QUIET PLACE REVIEW

As soon as I saw the trailer of ‘A Quiet Place’ on YouTube a couple of weeks ago, I simply couldn’t wait to go and see more of it! From the family aspect to the intense lack of sound, I was completely intrigued! Most of you will know that I am a huge horror movie fan so when I saw something as unique as ‘A Quiet Place’, I just knew I had to watch it. Lucky for me, a friend of mine was also very eager to see the film, so while we were traveling around Los Angeles, we decided to go and see it! Here’s a quick review on the movie itself without spoiling anything for the rest of you – let me know what you think!

Looking back at the experience while still acknowledging that my expectations were very high, I can honestly say I was impressed. Before walking in, I knew that this movie could’ve easily gone one of two ways : either the plot would end up being predictable and the jump scares would fall under cheap-scares…. or the film could be sly, intense and impressive. Lucky for me, the movie fell under the second category and was unpredictable and very well acted. The actor, co-writer and director of the project, John Krasinski perfectly conducted this masterpiece.

To simplify the plot, it’s about a family that has to live in silence as the world has been taken over by blinded creatures which only hunts via sound. Through the cinematic lens, we are delved into this family’s life eighty-five days after the invasion of said monsters. Other than their lives being very intense, I also found it very interesting how they coped with the ordeal, especially through their creative means of survival. Furthermore, the artistic indicators as to how much their lives had changed were also very drastic and well-thought out. The parents played by John Krasinski and Emily Blunt perfectly demonstrated the importance of family and their eternal longing to keep their children safe.
.
One thing thing that I absolutely adored about this movie was that John casted his real wife, Emily Blunt, to play his wife in the movie, making it all the more realistic and believable. Their onscreen chemistry was evidently amazing and like I mentioned before, both actors performed phenomenally. Also, this project was particularly special in its casting style, as their oldest daughter (Millicent Simmonds) was portrayed by a deaf actress. Meaning that on set, she had translators depicting  her director’s advice, making the film a stunning homage to the deaf community.

Now that you know about the amazing cast, lets head back over to the plot, and more specifically, let’s talk about these monsters; creatures which cause humans to walk barefoot on salt tracks and only speak with sign language to avoid ever being heard. The family also had to set up a safety light system in front of their house to warn one another about nearby danger : where a green light signified safety and red light meant danger.
.
A final aspect that I loved about this movie was the fact that you never knew when something was going to go wrong : one minute everyone’s safe and the next their not… Exciting right?

Anyways that brings me to the end of my post. This movie was originally advertised as a horror film, but personally I’d say it’s more of a thriller, as although it was super creepy at times, the thoroughly present theme of family love overshadowed said fear. All in all, I loved the movie! I would rank it at a 9/10 even though it’s not for everyone. If you love thriller/horror films you will definitely adore it!

I hope you guys liked this post! Let me know in the comments section below if you’ve seen ‘A Quiet Place’… or if horror movies just simply aren’t your thing… Do you like Emily Blunt? Have you heard of Millicent Simmonds?

As always – LOVE,
