I recently watched “Call Me by Your Name”, and automatically knew I would have to write a review about it. Every aspect of the film had me engrossed in the characters’ stories and I honestly fell in love with the romance story. I have so much to mention about this phenomenal Academy-award-nominated movie so I decided to start here, on my blog. “Call Me by Your Name” was adapted from the novel by André Asiman that came out in 2007, which received only good reviews, meaning that I simply cannot wait to read it!

Before telling you about how insanely astonished I was by the movie’s excellence, let me tell you a bit about the plot first. Set in 1983 Northern Italy, a 17-year-old boy called Elio (played by the incredible Timothée Chalamet) spends his summer with his parents in their holiday home. At said home, he meets Oliver (played by the talented Armie Hammer) who is his dad’s new archaeology intern, and well, the two fall in love over the course of 6 weeks…

When I first decided to watch this movie, I had no idea what to expect. I had heard really, really good things about it, especially considering its lead actor, Timothée got nominated for Best Actor in this year’s 90th Oscars (read my post about this year’s Oscars fashion HERE). Furthermore, I knew that the film would be different – as an independent production, I knew it wouldn’t look like your typical 21st-century love story…

Anyways, fast forward to when I finally watched the film, let me confirm to you all now, my expectations (although slight), were completely exceeded. The script took such a refreshing view on homosexuality and even more so, on love itself. Every aspect of the movie complemented one another and truly plunged me into Northern Italy and into the summer season. Alongside the beautiful scenery are some breathtaking performances, such as the very last scene where I genuinely couldn’t take my eyes off the screen. The cast definitely played a huge role in the creation of the charm that this movie so evidently had. The undeniable chemistry between the two lovers is overwhelming, making the love story all the more believable.

Now on to the main purpose of this post, I’d like to reiterate the underlying importance of movies such as this one. Although I acknowledge that not everyone is as open-minded as others, I support the idea that movies such as “Call Me by Your Name” should be celebrated, widely watched and used as a model for what the world as a whole should strive to comprehend.

While watching two ordinary people fall in love, you get to experience true cinematic art, art in which a lesson is learned and a long-lasting effect is created. Also, the fact that the parents in the film don’t play the ordinary homophobic role, one can actually see realism on the screen and not just make-believe. By eliminating that cliché antagonist, the director, Luca Guadagnino is able to also demonstrate a role-model for all existing parents worldwide.

Finally, another reason why I adore this film is the playlist. Alike the costumes, this aspect of the film just dives us headfirst into both the characters minds and the 1980s vibe. If you know me then you already know that 90% of the songs on my playlist are movie soundtracks. All in all, my favorites have to be “Futile Devices” alongside “Mystery of Love” (that was an Oscar nominee for the best original song) and “Love My Way” and finally, my ultimate and personal favorite “Visions of Gideon” .

Overall, I would give this movie a 10/10. Refreshing and finally representative of what both humans and love are, this is one if not the best romance story I’ve seen in years. Please, do yourself a favor and go watch it if you haven’t already.
