Hey guys! I hope you are all doing good even in these strange times and are safe with loved ones. For today’s post, I wanted to share 10 of my favorite movies and tv shows that recently came out to help you fight boredom (ranked from least liked to favorite). These movies are all mostly available on Netflix and Apple TV! They range from crime to drama to horror to action, so there’s a little bit of every genre and hopefully, you’ll find at least one you haven’t seen yet (that you will love)! Thankfully a lot of movies and Tv shows were set to be released during ‘lockdown’ and I still can’t get over how good some of these are! I also shared some of my favorite shows from last year (which I highly recommend) at the end of the post! P.S. As per usual, this post does not contain spoilers.
Anyways, let’s get onto the list, shall we?
Synopsis: Based on a graphic novel and adapted by Joe Russo (Avengers: Endgame), ‘Extraction’ brings you at the heart of kidnaping as Tyler Rake is hired to save the son of an Indian gangster.
Starting with Netflix’s latest action starring the one and only Chris Hemsworth! It had been a while since I had seen a kidnapping film and it ended up being way better than I anticipated. It had a fabulous cast and demonstrated top-notch action scenes! Although it won’t be my favorite action movie of the year, I still really enjoyed it and highly recommend it if you like action/thriller films!
Synopsis: As Spencer goes back into Jumanji, his friends, Martha, Fridge and Bethany re-enter the game in hopes of bringing him back home unaware of what challenges might come across them.
Onto ‘Jumanji: Next Level’! Kevin Hart truly brought the magic and laughter to this sequel that wouldn’t quite have shined as much without him. It was great to see the cast play other characters and is honestly what made it so fun for me! ‘Next Level’, brings you into a lot of new adventures filled with jokes and was super entertaining to watch!
Synopsis: As Harley recently broke up with the Joker she is now alone, unprotected and on the run with Gotham’s crime boss, Black Mask, his right-hand and thugs after her. But as she faces them one after the other, she discovers she’s not alone after all.
Ever since I heard this movie was in the making I couldn’t wait to finally go see it! Although it didn’t get the best reviews, I have to say I personally really enjoyed it! The only two critics I have to say about it are the lack of characterization (apart from Harley Quinn) and I also found that the film was slightly too messy. It was constantly going back and forth to explain the full story which got quite confusing. But even those two things didn’t really ruin the movie for me. I thought it was a great portrayal and closer peek into Harley’s life (amazingly portrayed by Margot Robbie)! It was the addition that I was waiting for from DC.
Synopsis: After escaping from her crazy boyfriend, Cecilia tries to get used to her new normal but an invisible man comes to stalk and terrorize her. With an idea of might be happening, she tries without success to get help from the police, but as they repeatedly refuse to believe her Cecilia decides to takes the matter into her own hands and fights back.
Onto the last film from this list! ‘Invisible Man’ starring the crazily talented Elisabeth Moss, is truly unlike any other thriller/horror you’ve seen before. This film does a wonderful job at putting you inside of Cecilia’s shoes and what she’s going through – as you get frustrated with her when she tries to explain to everyone the unexplainable. This movie is really original and was breath of fresh air in the horror genre!
Synopsis: A fictionalized take on Emily Dickinson (acted by Hailee Steinfeld) as a teenager trying to make it as a poet in the 1840’s and facing many challenges along the way.
I was also highly anticipating watching ‘Dickinson‘, one of Apple TV’s best latest show. Which is definitely original, to say the least, and was unlike any of my expectations. I absolutely loved it! I would just say that I would’ve preferred if they had stuck with the time period (with the costumes, language, etc) a little bit more but the modern twist they added was still nice! Hailee was also amazing in the lead and I quite frankly couldn’t picture anyone else playing the role.
Synopsis: Shaun Murphy, a young surgeon with autism leaves his home as he got recruited to a renowned hospital in California and settles into his new normal life.
I absolutely loved this show ever since I started it in 2017 and it’s just got a third season! If you haven’t seen it yet and like medical dramas, like me, this one is for you. It’s quite unlike other medical shows and is incredibly entertaining!
Synopsis: This is a historic drama inspired by the life of Madam CJ. Walker (Octavia Spencer). ‘Self Made’ shows her in the early days of building her hair brand in the 1900s and how she managed to build her empire and ended up the first African American self-made millionaire.
Onto another historical drama miniseries! I’m so glad Octavia Spencer finally got the opportunity to truly show off her talent, and well, it didn’t disappoint! The show stuck to its time period pretty well (apart from modern music, which I didn’t mind too much) and it also did a good job at bringing you back to that era! The show includes many topics (beauty stereotypes, women opening their own businesses for the first time in the 1900s and more..). It was only shown in four short episodes and I almost can’t find any flaws to criticize! I can’t believe no one ever made a movie or series about her story before 2020, I highly recommend it if you haven’t seen it yet.
Synopsis: As 14-year old Jacob Barber gets accused of the murder of his classmate, his mom Laurie and lawyer dad, Andy must face their new challenging normal and fight for to prove the innocence of their son.
Onto Apple TV’s latest tv show! Although some might say it’s a little slow, I disagree and absolutely loved it! I saw the first four episodes and would’ve seen the whole 6 if they were all available, that’s how much I liked it! The series not only has a mind-blowing cast that delivers: Chris Evans (known from ‘Captain America’), Michelle Dockery (known from ‘Downton Abbey’), Jaeden Martell (known from ‘It’) but it is full of suspense, drama, and mystery! It was definitely a hit for me.
Synopsis: An unusual group of robbers attempts to execute the 2-year elaborate plan from the Professor; do the biggest heist in Spanish history and stealing 2.4 billion euros.
Money Heist’s part 4 is now finally available and I can’t wait to finish it! If you love this show as much as I do you probably already started watching its last season, and if you haven’t, what are you waiting for? Money Heist is one of Netflix’s big hits and shows you life through the eye of the bad guys. Not only is the storyline crazily compelling, but the acting and suspense that go with it also won’t let you stop watching!
Synopsis: After a laundering scheme went wrong Wendy and Marty are forced to take their children and relocate to the Ozark lakes in Missouri, where even more obstacles will come in their path.
Onto the last show from this list and the last one, I started as well! ‘Ozark’, was one of my favorite surprises from this year and I can’t believe I stopped watching it after only watching an episode a couple of years ago! It’s one of the shows that I get recommended most from people and now I completely understand why. I now highly recommend it to you as well! Ozark really has it all from dark humor, twists, a talented cast, beautifully shot, well-paced and amazing soundtrack! I truly could go on and on about all the things I love about this show!
That wraps up my top 10 latest favorite movies and tv shows from 2020 so far! Let me know down in the comments which show you’re watching at the moment?
I also highly recommend you seeing these shows from last year if you want even more suggestions! ‘The Morning Show’ 8/10 (available on Apple TV), ‘You’ 8/10 (available on Netflix), and ‘Chernobyl’ 9/10 (available on Amazon Prime Video).
That’s it for today. Once again I hope you’re all happy and safe wherever you are during this pandemic.
Lots of LOVE, as always,
