Hey guys! How is it going? For today’s post, as you have most likely guessed by the title, I will be sharing my thoughts on Todd Phillips’ ‘Joker.’ Quickly before heading into today’s post, I want to apologize for not posting in a little while, this post got me thinking a lot!
By the way, this post is *spoiler-free* (as always) for those who of you who haven’t got the chance to see it yet. Alright! Without further ado, let’s head onto the review, shall we?
It was about time the Joker got a stand-alone film! He’s one of my favorite comic book characters (and is so intriguing), I couldn’t wait to discover more about his origin and his story in general in a two-hour-long action/drama. The movie got a lot of attention in the media, to say the very least, so I definitely wanted to watch it. I also wanted to see if it was as good as most people claimed it to be.
First of all, for those who aren’t familiar with the Joker aka Arthur Fleck’s story, let me take you on a little stroll back to the early ’80s as we are taken back to Gotham! Here you see life from Arthur’s perspective, a clown and aspiring comedian in his 40s, as he gets unemployed (and after repeatedly getting put down) and slowly downfalls into madness.
One of my favorite things about this film is how beautiful the cinematography was as well as the stunning setting they created that truly brings you back to the streets of that crazy era! It was well directed, and there are countless breath-taking shots throughout the film. I also enjoyed that it was very realistic for a ‘comic book’ movie, which is hard to say for most DC/Marvel Universe movies. The fact that it was so realistic also made the film even darker, in my opinion. But I overall thought it was unpredictable and had a captivating character study to watch, especially from one of entertainment’s best villains!
I thought Joaquin Phoenix indeed was what made the movie good! He delivered a truly mesmerizing performance. From the laughs to the dances, I was all for it. The rest of the cast was great too, but Phoenix is the star here. The soundtrack was also really well chosen and endorsed the experience as you literally see Joaquin Phoenix transform into the Joker before your eyes. But I still feel like the message of the film could have been a little clearer, but it leaves you thinking, which is one of the biggest compliments someone can give to a movie.
I overall loved most aspects of the ‘Joker’, but I felt like they still could’ve done more and be clearer about his personal motives as it feels a bit shallow. I would watch it again and recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity to. I give this movie a 7/10 as Phoenix’s acting was spectacular and because of how nice the scenery was and overall a terrific film!
Let me know what your thoughts are on Todd Phillips’ ‘Joker’ if you have gotten to see it yet! If you have seen it, did you agree or disagree with any of the points I made?
Lot’s of LOVE, as always,
