Hey guys! I hope everyone’s doing good! I don’t know if you have all watched Netflix’s new rom-com ‘Sierra Burgess is a Loser’ yet. But, I wanted to talk about it since it is very popular. If you haven’t watched it and wanted to read a review on it first, well then, you have come to the right place! This movie comes after the wild success of Netflix’s last rom-com ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’ (click HERE for my full review of it). After watching ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’ I knew I had to watch this movie. So this is what I thought…
First, we have to start with the amazing cast. Shannon Purser, who played Sierra Burgess was recognizable to me as she played Barb in Stranger Things. If you have read many of my previous posts, you would know that I love ‘Stranger Things’. Kristine Froseth who played Veronica and RJ Cyler who played Sierra’s best friend were equally as good. And of course, Noah Centineo as Jamey who as I think most of you reading this would know; played Peter in ‘To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before’.
The cast and Shannon and Noah, in particular, were the reason I wanted to watch this movie. I had seen the trailer and was so excited to watch it, but, I feared it wouldn’t be as good as Netflix’s last craze ‘To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before’. To be completely honest, I wasn’t very far off. It really wasn’t as good.
(Warning) slight spoilers ahead:
This 105-minute modern comedy/drama, which is a retelling of the Cyrano de Bergerac story set in high school, revolves around Sierra. She is a high school senior that doesn’t fit the stereotypical ‘beautiful girl’ stereotype. Meanwhile, Veronica, who plays the mean popular girl fits perfectly in the female beauty stereotype. The story kicks off when Veronica purposely gives Sierra’s number to a boy Veronica is rejecting, to therefore embarrass Sierra. The story makes a turn when Veronica, the popular girl, and Sierra, the nerd team up to both help each other in their lives to win over their high-school crushes.
When I finished the film I decided that there were a lot of great scenes, but there were also some not so good ones… One of my favourite things about this movie was seeing a hateful relationship turn into a friendship. It also showed what really goes on in someone’s life behind the curtains. Although I liked these aspects I found that the movie was still missing something. Everything went by too fast and everything felt very forced (especially throughout the middle and the end). I also found that the story was not very believable. Especially the end. I think every girl or boy knows that relationships don’t happen the way they seem in the movies. But, this romance was a far stretch from the reality of relationships. As much as I think everyone was very happy that Sierra ended up with her High School crush I personally felt that that was a fake scenario and that wouldn’t usually happen. Not at all because of the way Sierra looks or her body type but because I don’t think a guy would usually end up with someone who has just catfished them. But that is my personal opinion.
At the end of the day, it is only a movie so it is okay, but the catfishing went a little bit too far for my tastes and began getting a little creepy in some scenes. I also personally thought that RJ Cyler was a total scene-stealer and he lit up the few scenes he was in!
I didn’t love this movie but I certainly didn’t hate it either. The soundtrack was really good and so aesthetically pleasing! I give this movie a solid 6/10 as it was a pretty average rom-com.

P.S. I think most of us can agree that Noah Centineo is a total hottie and was totally worth watching the movie for.. Just saying!
Lots of LOVE, as always,
