DID IT DESERVE ALL THE HATE? – “CAPTAIN MARVEL” REVIEW

Hey guys! How’s it going? If you have been following my last couple blog posts, you should be aware that I attended the “Captain Marvel” World Premiere with none other than my amazing mom. We had such a fun time and I’m glad she got to come with me. I dedicated a full post about my experience attending the premiere HERE, if you would like to check that out. But for now, this post is about my thoughts about the movie itself. Since going to the premiere I have read and heard quite a lot of bad things about Marvel’s latest addition to the MCU, ‘Captain Marvel’. Even though I was a bit disappointed by the trailer when it came out a few months ago. But I didn’t judge the movie until I actually saw it, and here’s what I thought.
.
I would just like to say before I start the review that I love that the movie came out on Women’s Day! I think this provided such a strong message because normally on women’s day a rom-com comes out that is usually portraying a stereotypical girl, however with this movie we can see a very strong woman character!! This is such a good message and as a little side note, I would just like to say that I love that in Hollywood there are more movies with strong independent female characters and also more portrayal of the LGBTQ community!! Anyways let’s get back to the movie review! (P. S. Happy late women’s day to every amazing woman reading this post and to all the guys reading this post shout out to you if you support women and make an effort to never put them down!)

Anyways, as I previously said, I wasn’t a huge fan of the trailer of this movie but I was still super eager to go see it! I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but I was expecting mainly a lot of ’90s themed things and music and a lot of very badass scenes. I love Marvel movies and it’s so fresh to see a female character as a lead superhero for once (like I mentioned before)! She’s also the strongest superhero in the MCU which is honestly even cooler. I was hoping that the movie wouldn’t get compared to DC’s ‘Wonder Woman’ too much (since really the only thing that they have in common is a female lead superhero) and that the movie would be overall better. After watching both ‘Captain Marvel’ and ‘Wonder Woman’ I certainly wouldn’t say that one is a better movie than the other since they’re both very unique in their own way.
.
Firstly I would like to say that the movie gave a beautiful homage to Stan Lee with his cameos, as well as a powerful one in the movie! The entire theatre was in awe and felt so much emotion from these scenes. But let me tell you a bit more about the plot of the story itself. The story is essentially about Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) (aka Captain Marvel), who is becoming the most powerful superhero in the world whilst earth is in the middle of a war between two groups of aliens. The story is set in the 90s which is really cool because no Marvel movie has ever explored this time period. Since the movie happens very early on in the timeline of the MCU (right after ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ and before ‘Iron Man’), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) was digitally modified to appear younger, which is so cool! We get to learn how he got his eye patch (which isn’t what you would originally expect) and it’s the biggest role he has got in a Marvel movie yet, which was one of the best parts of the film. I absolutely loved his acting and that we got to know more about his character!

I was expecting a much bigger feel for the ’90s although they still included good music and a few references here and there. The music was different from most MCU movies but reminded me a lot of the music of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Thor: Ragnarok’. Although the movie was fun and enjoyable something still felt a little off about it and I seriously couldn’t quite get my hands on what it was. I truthfully didn’t want to say this and Brie Larson is an amazing actress but she just feels a little off for the role. The tune of the movie was also a little off and there weren’t that many shock surprises (which these types of movies usually have). I think that the movie was trying to tell too many stories at the same time and it felt messy at times. I was hoping Carol would get a little more personality than she did in the trailer, but she never did. But, I still overall liked Carol’s performance as Captain Marvel and am stoked to see her in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ next month!
.
The casting of this Fantasy/Science-Fiction film included very amazing actors and actresses! From Samuel L. Jackson to Brie Larson (who was very good in ‘Room’ which btw is a must-see), to Ben Mendelsohn (who was really shining as Talos). I also adore Gemma Chan from “Crazy Rich Asians” but her part in this one was smaller than what I expected but she was still great.

To add a little bit more about Carol Danvers’ character, I love that she doesn’t hesitate and just goes for things and constantly knows what she’s doing. Although she doesn’t have much of a personality (like mentioned before). But one of the problems that I’ve had during the second part of the movie is that it doesn’t feel like she’s discovering her powers for the first time. We also don’t get enough time to really see the journey of the discovery of her powers.
.
I liked that the movie didn’t end with a huge fight scene (like most superhero movies), that was very refreshing. Although there were still some really cool fight scenes, like in space! But throughout the film, I found myself waiting for THE superhero moment that every superhero movie has but it never came. I guess we will just have to stay tuned for more!

I overall enjoyed ‘Captain Marvel’ and will most definitely watch it again! It’s not even close to being my favorite Marvel movie but it surely is a very good addition to the Marvel universe! I’m honestly very excited to see what they have planned for her in the upcoming movies! The movie was fun and yet sentimental at times and I recommend it if you like super-heroes and science-fiction films. I give this movie a 7/10. Is this movie worth the hate? Not entirely. I think there was a lot of controversy around the movie and people like to be very critical.
.
I just quickly want to say I’m super thankful and grateful to have gotten the insane chance to go to the premiere with THE BEST plus one, my mom! We both truly had so much fun there and I can’t wait to share all the other cool stuff coming! Stay tuned!
.

.
Have you seen Captain Marvel? Also, have you heard of Brie Larson before? If so from where? I personally knew her by name for a while but I became a huge fan of her after her heartbreaking performance in ‘Room’!

.
Sending you guys all the best! Once again, happy late women’s day!

Lot’s of LOVE, as always,
