Since the creation of Instagram in 2010, thousands have used the app to put forth an enhanced representation of their lives. To do so, people edit their pictures and alter their posts accordingly. Ever since I personally joined Instagram in 2013, I have used a very specific editing routine to enhance the colors in my pictures. Recently, doing so has become almost as fun for me as taking the pictures themselves! Anyways, I’ve received loads of questions recently as to how I edit my pictures and therefore decided to write a post answering exactly that!
The two main apps that I use are Facetune and VSCO. Here is a detailed account of how I explore both applications :
1. Once onto the app, I add details, fixing all the little things that didn’t come out well on the pictures
2. Then, I apply the filter ‘Vibrance’ which raises the saturation and increases contrast, as well as makes everything look super cool.
3. I also use the filter ‘Whiten’ which makes any background or T-shirt look extra crisp and clean!
Those three steps make up what I almost always follow when I use Facetune. Once I’m happy with the results from this specific app, I save the picture and then move onto VSCO, where the true magic happens!
Disclaimer : Some filters come with the app and some have to be bought. Since I’ve had the app for around 2 years now, some of the filters aren’t being sold anymore since they were part of limited edition packages…
1. My absolute favorite filters are C1 to C8! I use them for almost all my pictures and am completely obsessed with them. To decide which one to use, I simply try them all out and adjust their intensity to choose the perfect match! To avoid the pictures ever looking too unnatural, I usually place the intensity of the filter at around 9.5 out of 12, so that the pictures look neither dull, nor overdone.
2. After this vital step, I move onto my personal editing favorites which include adjusting the exposure and contrast of the pictures. Its at this moment where I also straighten the picture if it isn’t already straight!
3. Moving on, I also adjust the tint if I want the picture to have a slightly more green undertone or a pink one. This really brings out the colors and also helps with making my skin look less pale!
4. And last but not least, the GRAIN effect! I love adding grain to my pictures, and I can usually automatically tell if it suits the picture or not. If it does, I simply adjust to see how much is the perfect dose and how much is too much, finding the perfect balance is again key to a great photo’s success!
And that’s it! Keep in mind that I really don’t Facetune all my photos and I don’t use that many effects on VSCO either. I just wanted to share all my favorite features with you from the app! Every photo is different but the main thing I focus on is the color. I always want the color of my outfits or of the shot itself to pop out as that is what I feel contributes to the pictures beauty.
Keep in mind that this process is also how I edit all the pictures for my blog! Anyways, hope you enjoyed my little secrets!
